9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 video formats explained

Compare vertical, square and landscape video, source framing and export resolution.

9:16 is vertical, 1:1 is square and 16:9 is landscape. Aspect ratio describes the image’s shape; resolution describes its pixel dimensions. One ratio can be exported at different resolutions.

When should I choose 9:16?

Use it for short content intended for a vertically held phone. A landscape source can still produce vertical output, but preserving its composition may require a different layout. Choosing the ratio first avoids resizing every completed clip.

When do 1:1 or 16:9 make more sense?

A square layout can suit particular social posts. Landscape gives wide scenes, presentations and multiple speakers more room. Consider which information must remain visible rather than choosing solely by a platform name.

Does 1080p guarantee a better image?

No. More pixels cannot create real detail from a blurry or low-quality source. Free outputs are 720p-class; paid plans target up to 1080p when the source permits. Source resolution and layout changes affect the result.

What is the difference between cropping and a blurred background?

A blurred-background layout can preserve the source image inside another ratio. Cropping discards image edges. If a second speaker or presentation text would disappear in vertical output, preserving the composition can make the clip easier to understand.
